Choose the translation.
Then choose the edition.

KJV or NKJV?
The KJV uses older English vocabulary and forms such as “thee” and “thou.” The NKJV updates vocabulary and grammar while retaining much of the KJV’s style. Read the same chapter in both before deciding. If you read with a church or study group, check which translation they use so following along is straightforward.
A sample from a familiar passage can help, but try a less familiar chapter too. Notice whether you keep stopping to work out a word. That is a more useful test than choosing from the title alone.

The edition is a separate decision
Once you know the translation, compare the printed books. A compact reference edition and a large-print reading edition may contain the same translation but feel quite different in use. Publisher labels such as “large print” are not a substitute for looking at a sample page at the intended size.
- Text size: look for the stated point size and a sample. A compact book usually makes a tradeoff between small type and portability.
- Layout: decide whether you prefer one column or two, and paragraphs or each verse starting on a new line.
- References: cross-references help you follow related passages. A study edition adds commentary, which reflects its editors’ approach.
- Note space: a wide margin gives you somewhere to write. A separate notebook works with an ordinary edition.
- Paper: check how much printing shows through from the reverse. Avoid assuming a marker will behave the same way on every Bible.
Two places to start browsing
Thomas Nelson KJV editions
Browse the publisher’s KJV range, then narrow it by print size and the reference or reading format you want. Check the exact ISBN and cover option before following a retailer link.
Browse the publisher’s editions ↗NKJV Compact Center-Column Reference Bible
A portable reference edition with cross-references, a concordance, and 8-point type. That compact size is useful for carrying, but may be too small for your everyday reading.
Publisher specifications ↗You can try the wording before buying a book
Use a publisher’s sample or borrow an edition to compare the translation and layout. The aim is to choose a book you can read comfortably. A leather cover or extra study features won’t fix type that is too small for you.
